Udyam (MSME) Registration: Benefits and Process
Udyam registration is free, paperless and the gateway to a range of MSME benefits. Here is what it gives you and how to file.

Udyam registration is the current form of MSME registration in India. It is a government registration that identifies a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise and unlocks benefits reserved for that category.
What it is
The registration is based on the business's PAN and Aadhaar, is filed on the Udyam portal, and results in a permanent registration number. There is no fee, and the certificate is generated online.
Who can register
Manufacturing and service enterprises that fall within the micro, small or medium thresholds can register. The thresholds are based on investment and turnover and are set by the government, so confirm the current limits before applying. A business can register once, and the classification is updated automatically as returns are filed.
The benefits
Registered MSMEs can access collateral-free credit under schemes designed for the sector, benefit from the statutory protection on delayed payments, and are given preference in government procurement. There are also concessions on certain fees and, subject to conditions, relief on some taxes. Registration is often a prerequisite to apply for sector-specific subsidies.
The delayed payment protection
One of the most valuable benefits is the protection on delayed payments. A buyer must pay a registered MSME within the agreed period, and beyond that period interest accrues. To rely on this, the supplier must be registered and must reference the registration on its invoices.
How to file
You need the Aadhaar of the proprietor or authorised signatory, the PAN of the business, bank details, and basic information about the activity and the number of people employed. The form is filed online and the certificate is issued immediately in most cases.
Keeping it current
The registration remains valid, but the classification can change as the business grows. Because turnover is drawn from the income tax return, keeping your returns filed and accurate keeps the classification correct.
