When this applies
- You are a growing business and want to know if you are approaching the registration threshold.
- You are deciding whether to register voluntarily before you have to.
- You are checking whether a new line of supply changes your position.
- You are planning next year's turnover and want to see the headroom left.
INR 25,00,000 turnover against a INR 40,00,000 threshold
- 1Annual turnover: INR 25,00,000. Threshold: INR 40,00,000.
- 2Turnover is below the threshold, so registration is not triggered by turnover.
- 3Headroom left = 40,00,000 - 25,00,000 = INR 15,00,000.
Registration is not required on turnover alone, with INR 15,00,000 of headroom left.
What this calculator does
Check whether your turnover has crossed the GST registration threshold. Enter your annual turnover and the threshold that applies to you, and it tells you whether registration is likely required and how much headroom is left.
How this is calculated
GST registration becomes mandatory once aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses the threshold. The threshold is not one number: it is generally INR 40 lakh for suppliers of goods and INR 20 lakh for suppliers of services, and lower for the special category states. Enter the threshold that applies to your supply and state, and the checker compares it against your turnover and shows the headroom remaining.
The formula
Register if turnover ≥ thresholdCommon mistakes to avoid
Using the goods threshold for a service
The service threshold is lower. Applying the goods limit to a service business can leave you unregistered when you should not be.
Counting turnover per branch
Aggregate turnover is across all places of business under one PAN, not per state or per branch.
Ignoring non-turnover triggers
Inter-state supplies and certain e-commerce sales require registration regardless of turnover. A green result here is not a complete answer.
Forgetting the special category states
The threshold is lower in the special category states. Using the general limit there overstates your headroom.
Frequently asked
- What is the GST registration threshold?
- Generally INR 40 lakh of aggregate turnover for suppliers of goods and INR 20 lakh for suppliers of services. The limit is lower in the special category states. Set the threshold that applies to your supply and state.
- What counts as aggregate turnover?
- The total value of all taxable supplies, exempt supplies and exports across all your places of business under one PAN - not just the turnover of one branch or one state.
- Do I have to register the moment I cross the threshold?
- Registration becomes mandatory once turnover crosses the threshold in a financial year, and the application is generally due within 30 days of becoming liable. There is also a separate obligation if you make inter-state taxable supplies regardless of turnover.
- Can I register voluntarily below the threshold?
- Yes. A business below the threshold can register voluntarily. Once registered, the compliance cycle - returns, records and invoices - applies, so it is a decision rather than a default.
- Is this the only reason registration is required?
- No. Registration can be required regardless of turnover - for example for inter-state supplies, for selling through certain e-commerce operators, or for a casual taxable person. Turnover is one trigger among several.
