When to use

When this applies

  • You are comparing offers and want the take-home figure rather than the gross.
  • You are checking a payslip and want to confirm the net amount.
  • You are budgeting and need the annual in-hand figure.
  • You are estimating how a change in deductions affects your monthly cash.
Worked example

INR 80,000 gross with PF, professional tax and TDS

  1. 1Gross: INR 80,000. Deductions: PF INR 1,800, professional tax INR 200, TDS INR 5,000.
  2. 2Total deductions = 1,800 + 200 + 5,000 = INR 7,000.
  3. 3Monthly in-hand = 80,000 - 7,000 = INR 73,000.
  4. 4Annual in-hand = 73,000 x 12 = INR 8,76,000.

Monthly take-home of INR 73,000, or INR 8,76,000 a year.

Overview

What this calculator does

Turn a monthly gross salary into take-home pay by subtracting the deductions actually withheld - provident fund, professional tax, TDS and anything else - and see the annual figure.

Method

How this is calculated

Take-home pay is the gross monthly salary minus the deductions withheld at source. The calculator adds the employee's provident fund, professional tax, TDS and other deductions, subtracts the total from the gross, and annualises the result. Because the deductions are entered as amounts rather than rates, the figure matches a payslip rather than an assumption about how the salary is structured.

Maths

The formula

In-hand = gross − (PF + professional tax + TDS + other)
Avoid

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing gross offers only

Two offers with the same gross can have different take-home if the structure or deductions differ. Compare in-hand.

  • Treating the employer's PF as your money

The employer's contribution goes to your PF account, not your bank account, so it does not reduce your in-hand and does not appear in it either.

  • Forgetting variable components

A bonus or variable pay is usually paid separately, so the monthly in-hand is lower than the annual figure divided by twelve.

Answers

Frequently asked

What is the difference between gross and in-hand salary?
Gross is the salary before deductions; in-hand is what reaches your bank account after provident fund, professional tax, TDS and other deductions are withheld.
What is typically deducted?
The employee's provident fund contribution, professional tax, TDS where it applies, and any employer-specific items such as insurance or loan recovery.
Is the employer's PF part of my in-hand?
No. The employer's provident fund contribution is a cost to the employer and is credited to your PF account, not paid to you as take-home.
Why is my TDS different each month?
TDS is often estimated on the year's projected income, so it changes as your salary or declarations change. Enter the figure your employer is actually deducting.
Is this the same as CTC?
No. CTC includes the employer's contributions and other costs, which are not part of your monthly gross or your in-hand pay.
